Igor Korzun

Artist, Photographer. "...When Korzun discovers an object, he immediately bonds with it: the object just succumbs to his wishes.  Brushes and paints, photo reagents and lenses, snails and whales, garage doors, letters, numbers and holes -- everything that he deals with does just that.  Yes, indeed, he cannot stay faithful to any of those things forever, yet everybody loves him..."

Igor Korzun about his work

"Everything that I do, without exception, had existed before I was born in the winter of 1965. All this had existed even before the one who gave birth to all of us was ever born, too. I do not feel comfortable signing my works: often I am not sure that it was me who created this or that piece. I just opened my eyes and saw what I saw. And here it is, depicted on paper or canvas, or described with words. These are just words, an ocean of words, the ocean in which we ourselves exist represented by mere words. As to me, I just cast my hookbait into the ocean and wait for strikes on the shore. Thank God, lately I’ve been having plenty of strikes. And it is my pleasure to share my catch with all of you."

 Biography

"Korzun Igor. The city of Minsk, 1965, January 26, was born in a hospital opposite the stadium. At that time, people in our city were born in two places, opposite the prison and opposite the stadium, I was born opposite the stadium. There was a school with ten years of idle experiences, passions, hatred and dreams, there was no love at school. The institute, one of the funniest institutes in our city, do not ask which and why, whoever was there knows.Love at the institute was and by no means idle, also there was a strong thirst, both for knowledge and all its other incarnations. After the institute and to this day there is only a road, winding, not always through the field and not always smooth, more often with puddles and potholes and even more often uphill, but when you stand on a mountain ..." Igor Korzun He was born in Minsk, in 1965 on January 26, where he graduated from high school (1982) and received a diploma in forestry engineering (1987).

Igor “Mityok” Korzun

"Whenever I come back to Minsk after I spend some time elsewhere, for a while I perceive the clothing worn by the people in this city to be some kind of uniform. Although the clothes that people wear here are very colorful, the way they wear them is quite uptight, conforming to some norm. Whomever you meet, managers, police officers, actors, students, or even bikers and street punks, you cannot but notice this. Then I remember about Mityok Korzun. After all, he is also somewhere here in the crowd, keeping the system in the proper balance.

I made attempts to dress like him: I tried wearing a flying helmet, riding breeches and a pair of ski boots.  Whatever I tried, it looked like I was showing off some avant-garde outfit. On the other hand, anything goes in Igor’s outfits: a knitted beret, a Russian Navy sleeveless undershirt, aviator glasses, a handlebar mustache, an umbrella cane, white cloth gloves, even a pair of low-cut canvas sneakers. Nothing is out of line, everything fits him organically.

I think it’s all about his relationship with things. When Korzun discovers an object, he immediately bonds with it: the object just succumbs to his wishes.  Brushes and paints, photo reagents and lenses, snails and whales, garage doors, letters, numbers and holes -- everything that he deals with does just that.  Yes, indeed, he cannot stay faithful to any of those things forever, yet everybody loves him. Everybody’s happy.

He is our national treasure. When you are out in town with him taking a walk, you see the city the way he sees it, you inhale its air the way he does: your soul accepts it all."
